Cataract which is the clouding of natural lens of eye is the leading cause of preventable blindness. Out of the collard lilied blind population of about 25 million, Cataract accounts for 80% of the cases i.e. roughly 20 million of this. It occurs usually in older age group, although can be seen infrequently in children and middle age group. India accounts for roughly half the cataract patients
CAUSES OF CATARACT:
- - Aging-Age related cataract.
- - Traumatic-Injury.
- - Work related-Excess sunlight.
- - Diseases and drugs: like Diabetes, Hypertension, Steroids (Taken for skin or arthritis or asthma)
- - Local Eye diseases-Uveitis/glaucoma
- - Juvenile-Cataract can occur at early age because of hereditary predispositions or drugs taken by mother during pregnancy.
SYMPTOMS OF CATARACT:
- - Decrease in vision.
- - Frequent change in glasses.
- - Haloes around light.
- - Difficulty in driving/glare.
TREATMENT:
- - The early definite treatment is removal of cataract and lmplantation of new lens in place of cloudy natural lens.
- - Phacoemulsification: - This is the latest method of removal of cataractous lens in which cataract is removed by fragmenting it into small pieces with ultrasound energy and aspiteriated it out through a very small self healing wound there by avoiding the use of stitches.
Methods of operation:
- - Conventional method[ECCE]
- - Modern method[phacoemulsification]
ECCE [extra capsulation contract extraction] :
- - Requires big 8-12 mm incision.
- - Multiple stitches are required to close the wound.
- - More post operative care is required.
- - Post operative complicatation rate is more.
Phacoemulsification:
Phacoemulsification: - This is the latest method of removal of cataractous lens in which cataract is removed by fragmenting it into small pieces with ultrasound energy and aspiteriated it out through a very small self healing wound there by avoiding the use of stitches.
Advantages:-
- - Done without injection.
- - Early Rehabilitation - can do your work on the same day.
- - Minimum post operative restrictions or complications.
- - Every type of cataract can be removed by Phacoemulsification.
